What is Ensemble Room NYC?
A series of weekly extracurricular small group music classes for school-aged musicians and adult hobbyists offered in Manhattan. Ensemble Room NYC has two sessions per academic year (October-January and February-June Academic year session last approximately 3 months, and conclude with a performance open to families, friends, and the public at the end of each session.Â
Why small ensembles?
Participation in small ensembles, aka "chamber music" or "combos", offers the unique opportunity for musicians to establish musical independence, develop artistic leadership, and build collaborative decision-making skills and confidence. In small groups, musicians have the opportunity to have their voices heard, be truly creative, and discover their unique artistic voice. Due to logistical constraints in schools and other training environments, many music students do not have the opportunity to participate in small ensembles until studying music professionally. Ensemble Room NYC offers the opportunity for students to participate in small ensembles early on in their musical upbringing, and for adult players to share the joy of making music with others!
Who can join?
Instrumentalists ages 8-18 with at least one year of experience on their instrument can register for student ensembles, and adults hobbyists, actor musicians, and professional musicians on secondary musicians. While some ensembles are specific in instrumentation, we also have groups that feature unique instrumentation. Most ensembles perform music arranged specifically for its members, and/or students in the groups compose some of their own music.
